How to Stay Focused in Your Job Search During COVID-19
April 19, 2020
There are a lot of people looking for work right now. And unfortunately, while almost every company
is not hiring at the moment, there are things you should definitely be doing
should you be in the job search phase.
Network
Socially
Engage and take part in online events – be
active on LinkedIn and leave thoughtful comments where you can. This will ultimately help you elevate your
own personal brand within your specific community. There are a few people I see post regularly
on and approach this really well.
Keep in Touch
Maybe you had an interview just before the
pandemic broke out. Keep in touch.
Take advantage of the slow time to learn as
much as you can or learn something new
Are there skills that you wanted to learn or know that if you improved on them, it would give you the opportunity to hit the ground running when you get back to work?
For example, did you join a new firm just before the pandemic and were in the middle of learning a new software. If so, can you take some online training courses given that things are slow so that you can improve your knowledge of the software?
Webinars – Great place to come together with like-minded people. Sometimes I find the best learning comes from the question other people ask during the webinar.
Gain market information
This is a great time to learn as much information about the landscape you are working in. What are other firms and companies like? I find most people are willing to talk at the moment. If you are considering joining a firm, why not connect with on LinkedIn from that firm and gain some insight into that firm’s culture.
No one knows for sure what the legal landscape or any job landscape will look like on the other side of this. But there are hints. For example, there are going to be certain practice areas and sectors that do quite well coming out of this. There are going to be others that won’t. Maybe now is a good time to consider changing areas of law or if you are just starting your legal career and looking for work, see if you can get out in front of the trend. Again, think what the legal job market look will like coming out of this and how can I position myself to benefit from that.
